About me/us

I grew up in a family of petrol-heads; big GM fans – everything else was “rubbish” – but one can blame that kind of thinking on the hot-headedness, and/or know-everythingness, of youth.

I fixed my own cars as much as I could, tried hard to make it as a car salesman, and worked in a state-owned vehicle workshop for a while. I was never a mechanic or a panelbeater there; just handled spares, logistics and administration.

Apart from an early slot in a motor club newsletter, as the rally scribe, I didn’t get into writing about cars until after I retired. I pursued that for 18 years until I got tired of the recurring sameness, and blandness, of modern cars. I gave it all up when I turned 80 and decided to try writing and gathering stories about old cars instead.

This is what you see here. The stories, so far, are from South Africa – more particularly KwaZulu-Natal where we live – but we would love to spread our net further. Feel free to get in touch: admin@oldcars.net.za
